2021 TxFit Scholarship

*This is an annual fundraising event to award one selected high school senior an opportunity to help them achieve their goals and pursue their dreams.

2021 Advocate: Sydney Harper

About Sydney:

I grew up as a missionary kid, traveling back and forth between the States and Taiwan. Our family moved frequently, so I am accustomed to change and enjoy this type of lifestyle. Moving around kept things interesting and gave me ample opportunities to experience new cultures and environments, and it taught me to be adaptable and flexible.

One of the many benefits of my time spent in Taiwan, completely immersed in the culture, was learning to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently. This allowed me to communicate with my mother and extended family members in their language, as well as others within that culture. After elementary school, my family moved permanently to the States.

Through middle school and high school, I was always a student striving for the best at whatever I did. In the classroom, I always enjoyed advanced classes with projects and the competition that came with it. Excellence and healthy competition in the classroom made the work seem fun. Outside the classroom, I have always been an athlete--competing in triathlons in Taiwan, team sports in middle school, multiple track seasons, and finally making wrestling my high school sport.

For me, wrestling had a discipline to it that no other sport offered. From cutting weight to balancing my diet, everything I do has to do with self-discipline and determination, but the reward makes it all worth it. The sport has taught me life lessons that have molded me, both in the way I carry myself and in the way I handle day-to-day confrontations. With these lessons of grit and hard work, I am equipped to attack the things I want to accomplish.

This past year, I started weighing my options and thinking more about the different career paths before me. I spent last summer exploring different interests and during that time, I chose to pursue aviation.

As I’ve worked toward my private pilot license, my interest in flying has continued to grow. Getting a taste of the aviation community has assured me that I want to make flying my career. Moving forward, I plan on working on my certificates and hope to one day work for a major airline.

Before I make it to the major airlines though, one of my stepping stone goals is to fly with my brother, Jeremiah. My brother and I have grown up doing most everything together--traveling, school, sports, and living as part of two different cultures. He really is like my forever best friend that I won’t be able to get rid of! Being in the cockpit together would be a small dream of mine come true, taking those trips with him and adding an adventure to our books that we have shared already. Sharing a cockpit for at least one flight would be a huge moment in earning and cherishing a career that has inspired us both.
